As a Scientist, Marine conservationists and cartographer, I am constantly amazed at the broad usefulness of mapping products that use human behavior and location data for important science based policy and advocacy.
This map from Global Fishing Watch shows near real time fisheries effort and Exclusive Economic Area Boundaries for places around the planet.Unfortunately, the Bahamas is data poor in this area.
There is a mix of suspicion amongst fisherfolk, lack of infrastructure and low funding and political will to make dedications to creating such information.
If you are a Bahamian fisher, what data would you be willing to share for government to properly value the fishery?
What data are you collecting now to position yourself for financial compensation in the event of a major oil spill in the Bahamas due to BPC’s #OilDrilling activities?
